Online psych/folk/ weirdo music store Anthology Recordings celebrates the holidays with an evening of rare grooves (spun by no less a dignitary than Finders Keepers labelhead Andy Votel) and a musical performance from the King Khan & BBQ Show. Should those aural pleasures not be heady enough for you, the evening will be lit up by the legendary Joshua Light Show, which powered many a trip back in the days at the Fillmore West.
Wednesday December 3rd @ WIRED Store 15 West 18th Street 6 -10 pm
streetlight.pngAnother sign that the recession has been going on a lot longer than a month: Two local record stores are going bye-bye. In fact, Open Mind Music -- which moved to Market Street a couple years back in the hopes of staving off extinction -- is already gone, having shuttered its doors last month. (The store will apparently sell its remaining underground hip-hop, freaky techno, and oddball rock at the Other Shop on Divisadero and online.) Now comes the news that the 24th Street location of Streetlight Records is going kaput after the holidays.

No Age - Brain Burner

Their show at the Troubadour tomorrow is sold out (and involved some weird rsvp situation that just seemed annoying), but No Age have a show tonight at the extremely tiny Pehrspace.  Apparently this is the lineup: No Age, New No Age, E&E, Faav!, Blue Glasses, Tleilaxu Music Machine, and Ghost Towne. I have no idea who nay of those bands are. If you do, go ahead and hit us in the comments because I'm definitely curious.

I'm pretty sure that New No Age is a No Age cover band that Randy Randall joined because he was super into them. No that's not a joke.

The show costs five bucks at the door and I'm sure if you wait around long enough you'll see Randy and Dean shred for awhile.

On the heels of their headswimming new release, St. Dymphna, Gang Gang Dance's Lizzi Bougatsos divulges her secrets to getting by as an artist/ musician in the city. She is the singer/percussionist of Gang Gang Dance and just finished her album The Proper Sex with Sadie Laska of their vocal/ percussion duo, I.U.D. She is also a visual artist who lives in Chinatown, NYC.

After filling up on yams, turkducken, and any and all assortment of pies over the past four days, we're back, ready to work off those holiday calories while siultaneously filling up the calendar with concerts and the like.

Little Joy - No One's Better Sake

After an extended holiday break, we're getting back into the swing of things full time. This week actually has some great shows, with most nights having three or four solid options. So after we stocked up on turkey and stuffing we should have the stamina to make it through a long week of shows.

Monday
Eagle and Talon, DJ Kevin Bronson @ Spaceland. Free

First of all, it's nice to see Kevin Bronson, former LA Times music writer, still out there in the scene making things happen. I'm sure he'll have a good local selection to play, and if you're not following his Buzzbands blog, it's definitely worth your time. Ok, and while we're at it we should go check out Eagle and Talon. These two girls were nice enough to send me a handwritten postcard asking me to come see them. How can I say no to that? They play a version of modern rock that's a touch more mainstream than your average Spaceland band, but they're still pretty weird.

Free from label woes, Snowden looks forward to moodier music

Anti-Anti - Snowden

Play

snowden.jpgSix months have passed since Snowden last appeared onstage at Lenny's for Corndogorama in June. Since then, the rumor mill has percolated with talk of relations turned sour between the band and its Wilmington, Del.-based indie label, Jade Tree Records. And for the most part, the rumors are true.

After inking a three-record deal with Jade Tree and embarking on six tours across the United States and Europe within a year's time, Snowden frontman/guitarist/principle songwriter Jordan Jeffares wasn't happy with how things were proceeding and he wanted out; so much so that he got his lawyer involved.

les hormones.pngOne time a few years back, I decided I was going to kick the post-Thanksgiving Tryptophan coma by shotgunning a few cans of Red Bull after devouring the turkey et al. If you're not into that kind of energy drink freakout (it does come with a nasty hangover), I suggest checking out Les Hormones on Saturday instead. The local trio -- featuring one hot lady and two hot gents -- infuses the typical garage-rock racket (see Crypt Records, Supercharger), with an added bit of French snarl. They've got one single out, on Head's Up Records, which has also released odd, scuzzy discs by lady vegetarians and King Khan's six-year-old daughter.

For this show, they're joined by Personal & the Pizzas, a semi-local outfit that plays the kind of '70s punk that flirted with power-pop and didn't get it's ass kicked (see Milk 'n' Cookies, Hubble Bubble).

Les Hormones, Personal & the PIzzas, Wild Thing @ Hemlock Tavern on Saturday, November 29; doors 9:30 p.m., tickets $5.
