San Francisco

yelle.pngIt's pretty damn dancey around here this week -- or as 2 Many DJs' film suggests "part of the weekend never dies." Maybe everyone wants to party down before the presidential election on Tuesday.

Tuesday

I'm one of those annoying people who tend to like an artist's earlier work better. But not Jenny Lewis'. I thought her first solo disc, Rabbit Fur Coat, was more accomplished than anything she did with Rilo Kiley, and I thought the last RK album, Under the Black Light, was half a great disc, even if it was super-duper-commericial. So why don't I like her new solo album, Acid Tongue? She's collaborated with artists I like -- people like Elvis Costello, M. Ward, Zooey Deschanel -- and she's sounds more like Bonnie Raitt and Laura Nyro than ever. Maybe Acid Tongue needs 10 years before it becomes a guilty pleasure, like Raitt's Give It Up. Or maybe I just like my crass commercialism more crass.
Jenny Lewis, Beachwood Sparks, Pierre De Reeder @ Herbst Theater (also Wednesday); doors 7 p.m., $27.50.

Wednesday

Weed-drenched, thugged-out misogyny doesn't come any funnier than Devin the Dude. Who else would rap how he didn't want to fuck his lesbian friend because she might want to wear his underwear. Okay, he's not for everyone, but this Houston rapper has been laying down serious G(anja)-Funk since the early '90s, collaborating with Snoop Dogg, De La Soul, and UGK along the way.
Devin the Dude, Coughee Brothaz @ Slim's; doors 9 p.m., $18.

Thursday

While it may seem weird to show a film about touring while a band is on tour, that's just what the Belgian boys in 2 Many DJs are doing. Of course, they're also playing in their band Soulwax and then DJing along with the fellas behind New York's "Fixed" party. While much of the world has caught up to 2 Many DJs -- lots of folks do hardcore technoization of rock tunes and mash-ups these days -- the pair still knows how to rock the dance floor. (Soulwax's electro-rock, however, is pretty dull, so you might want to show up late.)
Soulwax, 2 Many DJs, JDH and Dave P @ Mezzanine; doors 8 p.m. film at 8:30 p.m., tickets $18 advance.

Friday

Oh, there are so many choices on Halloween. This show seems like the best bet for the young and hip dance crowd, with French singer Yelle offering her fist-pumping-and-bumping anthems alongside the swishy Postal Service-y beats of Boston's Passion Pit and the angular dance-rock of East LA's Funeral Party. Popscene DJs Aaron and Omar keep the feets a-moving.
Popscene presents Yelle, Passion Pit, Funeral Party @ Mezzanine; doors 9 p.m., tickets $20 adv/$25 day of.

Saturday

Stockholm's Lykke Li gets a lot of comparisons to Bjork, which is kind of like saying Oasis sounds like the Beatles. Practically every British band sounds like the Beatles, and practically every elfin woman from Scandinavia sounds like Bjork. To me, the hushed vocals, stripped down beats, and sensual melancholy of Li's Youth Novels (produced by Peter, Bjorn, and John's Bjorn Yttling) recalls Ms. John Soda -- although the Germans would never offer up such a rivetingly personal couplet as "And for you I keep my legs apart/ and forget about my tainted heart."
Lykke Li, Friendly Fires @ the Independent; doors 8:30 p.m., tickets $17, sold out.

Sunday

If you're still not Halloweened or danced out by Sunday afternoon, strap on your best golf outfit and check out "The Country Club." Local electro promoters Blasthaus have somehow convinced the Cathedral Hill Hotel to host an afternoon dance party, complete with croquet and badminton greens, a heated pool, and DJs from parties like "Blow Up," "Lights Down Low," and "Kontrol."
"The Country Club" with DJs Jeffery Paradise and Richie Panic, Solar, Nikola Baytala, Anthony Mansfield, Sleazemore & Richard Oh, Eric Sharp, Shane King, Meikee Magnetic, Bling Crosby, and Nissus @ Catherdral Hill Pool and Pavilion; 1-8 p.m., tickets $8 advance.

Monday

This is one of the odder local pairings in a while. Beatmaster extraordinaire Diplo -- known for spinning everything from Brazilian funk to old-school rap to Indian techno -- headlines alongside tropically influenced noise-punk of LA's Abe Vigoda, the blippy house beats of London's Boy 8-Bit, and Gothy synth-wavers Telepathe.
Diplo, Abe Vigoda, Boy 8-Bit, Telepathe @ Great American; doors 8 p.m., $16.
