mike relm.pngRemember back in the early part of the decade when scratch DJs were all the rage? Wasn't that pretty ridiculous? I mean, people actually paid $15 to stand and watch a guy make a mess out of records they really liked. "Oh jeez, yes, finally, something I can dance to. No, wait, no no no, don't, you're murdering 'White Lines!'" Good times.

You don't hear much about turntablists anymore, even though they're still around. One of the biggest remaining local vinyl manipulators is Mike Relm. He's obviously very skilled with a hamster scratch, but he's also rather annoying, in that he plays lowest common denominator cuts (do we ever really need to hear anything off Thriller ever again?) and basically does a lot of that wicka-wicka stuff. Lately, he's been working video into his sets, which means he fiddles with clips while fiddling with his records. For this show, which is part of the SF Film Society's ongoing Film+Club, Relm will VJing alongside one-time local rap producer Peanut Butter Wolf and mash-up specialist Party Ben (Bootie, Live 105).

I will say this: Relm's video for "Everytime" from his recently released album, Spectacle, is rather clever.

He's also put together this decently inventive mash-up of trailers for three upcoming action films (The Punisher, Transporter 3, and The Spirit). Maybe he should go into video full-time and leave the clubs behind.

San Francisco Film Society & Mezzanine present SF360 Film+Club featuring Mike Relm, Peanutbutter Wolf, DJ Party Ben @ Mezzanine on Friday, December 5; doors 9 p.m., tickets $20.
