Out to the Bay - J-Boogie's Dubtronic Science
Local dude J-Boogie started out as a DJ, so it makes sense that his new disc with his Dubtronic Science band, Soul Vibrations (Om Records), is all over the map. There's the cool Latin soul of "Que Pasa" (with Deuce Eclipse), the funky R&B of "Revolution" (with Lyrics Born and the Mamaz), the silly-but-fun rap of "Inferno (with Lunar Heights), and the dull, meandering ambient trip-hop of "Same Ol' Thang" and "Dirty." It's an impressive achievement (save for the latter, of course), made that much more impressive by the final tune, "Out to the Bay."
On that song, Capitol A and Aima the Dreamer give shout outs to 40 local hip-hop DJs.
Forty. I counted them myself.
It just goes on and on, for 6 minutes and 12 seconds, "DJ Anna, she rocks the house/Ross Hog, he rocks the house," etc. etc.
Which made me think one thing. How crappy would you feel if you weren't included on that list? What if you were the 41st most popular rap DJ in the Bay?
Ouch.
