Usually, it's pretty hard to get San Franciscans to come over to Oakland. They figure they've got pretty much the same stuff over there (save for, um, the outrageously high murder rate), so why bother to risk a DUI or the ridiculously early last BART train? How about this for a reason? A multitude of quirky art galleries, loose open container laws, and a free burlesque show featuring a bevy of bodacious broads and a wild New Orleans-style marching band.That's what you get with Oakland's Art Murmur and the First Friday Follies.
Every first friday, a bunch of galleries in downtown Oakland keep their doors open late, and a battalion of hipsters ride their fixie bikes down to check out the scene, stopping in the Stork Club for a free show afterwards. Lately, the First Friday Follies has set up camp at the Stork, and this month they'll be offering music from the Gomorran Social Aid and Pleasure Club, a collection of hobo misfits who play 'Nawlins jazz filtered through the same lens as Tom Waits. But the main attraction is the burlesque show, featuring the tassle-twirling talents of such local lascivious lovelies (sorry, but you have to use alliteration when writing about burlesque) as Hoopsie Daisy, Eeyore the Clown, Little Eyeful, Sassy Hotbuns, and Chi Chis del Fuego. There'll be more ass shaking than during the '89 earthquake -- or the last E-40 video audition. Might just be worth driving over from S.F.
