Hypnotist - Built for the Sea

Play

BFTS.jpgDo you miss the Cranberries? Even a little? Well, if so, I've got the band for you: Built For the Sea. On their 2006 self-titled debut, the San Francisco quintet recalled the gauzy guitars, lullabye melodies, and dreamy, melancholy female vocals of that '90s Irish band. Hell, they even named one song "Dreamer."

But what if you don't miss the Cranberries? What then? Well, Built for the Sea's new EP, Mise en Scene, is far brawnier than the full-length -- and therefore bound to appeal to fans of both My Bloody Valentine and Radiohead. Lia Rose's singing is, well, ballsier that before, and the guitars of Jon Latimer (also in the Aimless Never Miss) are rougher and more jagged. The tunes feel more collaborative, possibly because they sound more like the members' other bands (drummer Eric Kuhn is in Silian Rail and bassist Daniel McKenzie was in Rum Diary).

For some reason, the Bay Area has always developed excellent noise-pop bands (see Overwhelming Colorfast, Film School, the entire Noise Pop Festival). With Mise en Scene, Built for the Sea makes a valid request to join the pantheon.

Built for the Sea celebrate the release of Mise en Scene with Tartufi and Low Red Land on Thursday, September 18 at Slim's. Doors 8 p.m., tickets $12.
