2 Ez 2 Luv U - Thee Makeout Party

budgetrock.pngYou know what will never die? Not rock 'n' roll -- that's bound to give up the ghost eventually. No, I'm talking about garage-rock. When there are only termites and robots roaming the Earth, when religious extremism and wonton greed and fear-mongering destroy us all, the bugs and the 'bots will devour -- both literally and figuratively -- every last Nuggets and Boulders and Love, Peace & Poetry compilation. Then they will get together and form bands inspired by the Troggs, the Standells, and the Count Five. And they will hold their very own Budget Rock Festival.

Until that time, however, Budget Rock will showcase the best down-and-dirty garage-rock made by human beinz. Now in its seventh year, the fest has ballooned to four days at Oakland's Stork Club on October 23-26. Besides all the righteous noise, there'll be a hot dog eating contest, a pancake breakfast, an obscuro-record fair, and a taco truck.

Here's a few thoughts about the dates:

Thursday @ 8 p.m.

This is Russell Quan's 50th birthday party. He looks pretty much the same as he did when he drummed for the Horseless Headmen or the Mummies or the Bobbyteens or 14 bazillion other bands. (There'll be a lookalike contest, so break out your Beatles whig.) Headliners the Hypsterz were garage-rock revivalists way back in the late '70s, as apt to play "Talk Talk" or "Action Woman as "96 Tears." Get there early for the Rantouls, a local trio who do the frat-rock style justice, and C'Mon Everybody, Tina Lucchesi's new band. Also, Supercharger's Darin Rafaelli opens with the Baci Galoopis.

Friday @ 8 p.m.

The headliner is Roy Head, who has been called "the white James Brown," but to these ears sounds more like a soul version of Jerry Lee Lewis. He doesn't do as many crazy moves as he used to (he is in his 60s), but he does occasionally do pushups onstage. He's joined by Roy Loney, who is only one letter away from "loony," which describes his songs with and after the Flamin' Groovies. Get there early for Apache, which I've already gone on and on about.

Saturday @ 3 p.m.

This is a long one: 11 acts, no sleep till Brokeland. I'm psyched (ha ha) for the slashing distoro-punk of LA's Lamps, the '70s proto-punk scuzz of Hank IV, and the Devo-meets-Beat Happening pop of Nodzzz.

Sunday @ 3 p.m.

The record swap starts at noon, and then we rock from there. Check out Seattle's Head, who do the Ramones proud with their catchy power-pop-punk;  the giddy bubblegum pop of Anaheim's thee Makeout Party; Mercy Wifebeaters, a supergroup featuring Russell and Darin (again) and Michele from Loli & the Chones; Top Ten, which features Tina L (who's in almost as many bands as Russell -- and, guess what, they dated, which must've made band practice scheduling very confusing) and sounds the way you wish NRBQ did; and Personal and the Pizzas, whose "I Don't Feel So Happy Now" might steal from the Replacements' "Happy Town" but it's so perfect that I'll punch Westerberg if he sues them.

Budget Rock VII @ the Stork Club, Oakland on October 23-26; doors vary, tickets $7-$10, $30 for a three-day pass.
