You know what's become one of the coolest spots in town? The Knockout, in the Outer Mission. It was cool before, back when Chicken John owned it and it was called the Odeon. Then, you were apt to run into eXtreme Elvis with a cue stick rammed up his derriere or some other kind of craziness.
But then Chicken got tired of all the noise complaints and "rat race" and sold it to some dude, who reportedly wanted to turn it into a rockabilly joint. Now, most folks know that rockabilly is as dead as ska or surf music, and the guy must've figured this out too eventually, because there's not a duckbill in the joint of late.
Instead, you've got karaoke happy hours, literary readings, the best root beer floats around (yes, they're alcoholic), and -- especially -- a crazy varied mix of DJ nights. Because the Knockout is so small, the dance parties can be hella specific, so you get everything from '90s altrock nostalgia ("Repeater") to doo-wop ("Lonely Teardrops") to soft-rock ("Lite Rock Sunday") to old blues and soul ("Shuckin' & Jivin'"). Tonight, they've got "Club Internationale," at which DJs Special Lord B (of the fantabulous "Saturday Night Soul Party"), Miss Pickpocket, and Elephant Princess will be spinning frothy '60s French pop.
Then, on Saturday, they're hosting "Booty Bassment," featuring DJs Ryan Poulson and Dimitri Dickinson playing the best in ass-shaking Miami bass and B-More electro-rap.
(Oh yeah, and the Knockout's web site is notoriously unhelpful, which makes it all the more cool and underground and very 1989 ... or 1969 .... or maybe 1929, I suppose.)
