Concrete Lights - Birdmonster
Holy change of pace, Batman! SF quartet Birdmonster used to be all slashing guitars and post-punk rhythms and raspy, Paul Westerberg-ian vocals. But on their sophomore album, they've become more bucolic, more rustic, more twig and tree than slanty haircut and rage amongst the machines.
Says here in the press notes that leader Peter Arcuni wanted
to "make a record that we could play not just on tour, but would also
translate to more intimate settings."
With its stripped-down acoustic sound and pretty harmonies, "Concrete
Light" sounds like a prime Go-Betweens track. "Our Ashes" feels
composed in
That said, there's still some of the old rock 'n' roll left in Birdmonster. With the galloping beats and serrated riffs of "Greenland Sound" and "The Iditarod," the band reminds us why we liked them in the first place.
