Gang Gang Dance, Growing, Psychic Ills, Sian Alice Group
The Paper of Note's Band of Note (mine as well, as I picked 'em on WNYC's Morning Edition a few days back) Gang Gang Dance have always been the bridesmaid, never the bride. Their CMJ shows in 2004 (opening for Sonic Youth) and in 2006 (opening for Hot Chip) were lush and frenetic (respectively). With the release of their long-anticipated St. Dymphna, that should all change. Now let's see if they can amalgamate their lush and frenetic halves tonight and elevate to the next plateau as their lauded peers Animal Collective and TV on the Radio. Part of The Social Registry's label showcase.

The Black Lips, Japanese Motors
One of the more ludicrous things about music marathons and such is how unused spaces overnight become venues for marketing companies and willing bands, no disrespect to either, as everybody needs to get paid right about now. While you no doubt have had chances to see Black Lips at McCarren Pool and Bowery Ballroom and in dingy basements, now you can get spat on as you twist in the Toyota Matrix-sponsored (and perhaps the true Japanese motors?) Antics Warehouse space in Brooklyn.

High Places, Pit Er Pat, Lichens, Matteah Baim
This underground spot has been flying low under the radar down off Bleecker St., but tonight they host Thrill Jockey acts Pit er Pat and High Places. Also on the bill is Lichens, the solo open-ended sound project from ex-90 Day Men man Robert Lowe and Matteah Baim, who has a haunting voice.

Saturday
Kirsten Ketsjer
Under-the-radar Danish band Kirsten Ketsjer is making quick converts and adding MySpace friends like Ponytail, the  Dirty Projectors, and WFMU during their time here. Hard to encapsulate their sound, but it is by turns ebuillent, silly, ecstatic, mesmeric, noisy, shimmering, driving.

Stars Like Fleas perform Cornelius Cardew
Not a part of CMJ, but you are no doubt worn out by the event come Saturday night. So why not check out something far off the CMJ map (though SLF are also on official CMJ bills)? As part of the Darmstadt New Music series highlighting the crucial New York New School movement of the 50s and 60s (including composers like John Cage, Morton Feldman, Earle Brown, etc.), Brooklyn's highly ambitious ensemble Stars Like Fleas perform selections from composer Cornelius Cardew's open-ended graphic score, Treatise.
