Kria Brekkan once provided the bubble and squeak for Icelandic act Mum before going solo. As sonically mischievous as her partner Avey Tare (of Animal Collective), her solo work is both intimate and inscrutable, cracked and holistic. Opener Sam Amidon has both a keen ear and keening voice, putting his folk into overalls and orchestra tuxedos. His vocals on "The Only Tune" on the recent Nico Muhly album sounds like nothing less than a mash-up of Roscoe Holcomb and Steve Reich.

The Mars Volta @ Hammerstein Ballroom 311 West 34th Street 7:00 PM All Ages $42

At their best, The Mars Volta blenders together Santana, free jazz, cumbia, and psychedelic rock. At their worst, they add Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rush to that mix, with scant seconds dividing the two extremes. But since the earliest days of their first band, At the Drive-In, singer Cedric Bixler-Zavalas has been an electric eel of a frontman while guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez is a solar flare of a player, incandescent if erratic.

If you are the type of jetsam to get caught up in Sigur Ros's beatific brand of jetstreams, then you are no doubt scouring Craig's List for tickets to this show at the majestic uptown church/ rock venue. Good luck with that.

For those not booking bungalows in Monticello, New York for the ATP Festival, this bill will provided both communal freak-folk noise via the unbathed and unfocused Texas ensemble Indian Jewelry, as well as the intimate and haunting pipes of New York's own enigmatic Mira Billotte (of White Magic, Quix*O*Tic) and that of Finland's similarly divine Lau Nau.

Dean & Britta @ The Zipper Factory  336 W. 37th Street $20 10:00 PM

No more Luna (but you probably already knew that, what with the final farewell tours and the concert documentaries and whatnot. But there remain plenty of finely-shaped male-female harmonies to be emitted from Dean and Britta at this theatre/ tavern/ performance space. Perhaps they'll dip into the back catalog or even flash their recent cover of the Cure's "Friday I'm in Love"?

Arnold Dreyblatt @ Knitting Factory 74 Leonard St. Doors 7:30pm $10 adv/ $12

While ATP attendees will be subjected to the one-note maelstrom of My Bloody Valentine on this evening, locals can get their own dose of one-note beatitude (or pummeling) from composer Arnold Dreyblatt. A minimal composer who builds his own instruments to play in his system, with roots in the music of Alvin Lucier, Pauline Oliveros, and La Monte Young, he's released albums on Phill Niblock's imprint as well as John Zorn's Tzadik label. That particular album, Animal Magnetism, remains one of the most ecstatic slices of minimal music of the late 20th century, sounding at times more like a drunk New Orleans brass band than something precise and mathematical (though it's that too).
