Captured less than six months before the punk band would implode, the Clash were here opening for The Who on their world tour. As a downpour threatened to dampen the proceedings, Clash frontman Joe Strummer implored the stadium crowd to dance "to avoid the raindrops." Sixteen songs, delivered at a whiplash pace, show how the band could amalgamate their strengths (reggae, funk, rockabilly, disco, early hip-hop) under the banner of "punk." The line about "phony Beatlemania" that appears in opener London Calling" feels appropo as the band gains velocity.
Traces of Jamaican music crop up early on, as "Magnificent 7" veers into a cover of Toronto-based rasta Willi Williams' apocalpytic cut "Armagideon Time" before changing back into "Magnificent"'s grooves. Spiky, terse, frantic, the band compresses their hits: "Rock the Casbah," "Train in Vain," and "Should I Stay or Should I Go" and gives room to "Spanish Bombs" and "The Guns of Brixton." As they slash through a cover of "I Fought the Law" as their last song of the set (and the last song the original group would perfrom) the show, much like the band, and much like the stadium itself (not to mention the Mets' season), feels over far too soon.
