As six degrees of Kevin Bacon (and the ongoing economic collapse) has taught us, interconnectedness is part of the New York experience. It's especially for musicians and DJs, who keep weird hours. And while one-off collaborations and supergroups are an extension of such a thing, it still doesn't quite explain the Phenomenal Handclap Band, who are playing a free show tonight at the Tribeca Grand.
Peep the Phenomenal Handclap Band's MySpace page and you'll see a line-up that could double as an eclectic music festival. Players include members from TV on the Radio, Amy Winehouse's band, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Escort, The Mooney Suzuki, Calla, Si*Sé, and L'Trimm ("Cars That Go Boom"). The project is spearheaded by Daniel Collás and Sean Marquand, two DJs who are moving towards live music-making on their own terms. How the members are all in town at the same time, much less will fit on the same stage, makes my iCal crash just trying to coordinate it all. And how they shoehorn slinky modern disco with hints of Joe Bataan and Alan Parsons Project work live should be interesting.
