Today's "My NY" comes from drum man-machine Kid Millions of Brooklyn's mightiest band, Oneida. Not content to be one of the heaviest (and funniest) groups of the scene, Millions is also CEO of Brah, an offshoot of indie mainstay Secretly Canadian. This Saturday, Secret Project Robot hosts the third annual BRAHloween party, featuring Oneida, Awesome Color, Knyfe Hyts, and other surprise guests. But before that, trace Millions' grumpy path through the hood.
OK - I'll keep it real on this. . .

Usually when I compile these lists I endeavor to pick out the sweet joints that I think need to get more love but in my REAL life more often than not I'm just eating at crappy diners or trying to find the most uncool bar in the world on a Saturday night so I can sit down and have a drink. So with that in mind I will give you a mediocre tour of My NY...

For breakfast I've been lazy lately. . .the worst place that I still go regularly is on Bedford between North 6th and North 7th. It's a Polish place called S+B - there's a take-out window and a dining room. I've eaten breakfast in the dining room way too many times. If you get a sandwich at the take out entrance there are a number of Polish ladies you can fall in love with and you can get an egg sandwich with kielbasa and kraut and be really happy for about 2 hours. If you eat in the dining room it is inexplicably dark (mood lighting for breakfast?!), explicably empty (the food is indifferently prepared and served) and overpriced. I've never eaten dinner there and I never will. I usually go there b/c I'm lazy in the morning. I should be walking the extra two blocks to Kasia's - which is actually good.

Lunch? For fuck's sake I don't know where to begin. I work in Chelsea betw. 7th and 8th Avenues on 30th. . .you can throw a stick and hit a place that serves food poisoning. So where do I find myself getting take out from the most? A little crappy joint called Home on 8th - 391 8th Ave,   New York 10001 Btwn 29th & 30th St - in fact I'm eating something from there right now! Basically take some young, upstart Chinese restauranteurs who have a sense of the market beyond the cash and carry Chinese nightmares that dapple every neighborhood in NY and offer some veggie items, play dance music and have some truly half-assed Shepard Fairey - Obey art work on the wall. It's mediocre Chinese in hipster clothing and I eat there a few times a week. I get take out b/c the place is really bad vibes. Its right next to a Bikini Bar which is a good deal scarier. Young eastern European women serve drinks in the their bikinis. Above the bar is a gigantic sign advertising colonics.

Dinner? Har. . .I would recommend going back in time when Matamoros Puebla Grocery was on Bedford and was the only decent place to grab a quick bite. I would recommend that place and feel like I was doing the world a favor. But the world stabbed me in the back and the place is closed. So what do I end up doing? I stop into the Oasis on North 7th and Bedford. A hummus and falafel filling station between the Bedford L stop and whatever hovel/mortgage payment rip off a recent grad might be propping up, this perfectly passable counter serves mostly cold falafel sandwiches with OK ingredients. No, it's not amazing food and yes, they could give a shit about you and the bathroom is "OUT OF ORDER". I mean you just have to ask to use bathroom so it's not a huge deal. . .but I always feel weird about that sign.

Drinking/getting drunk - there's a truly mediocre place on Metropolitan between Graham and Bushwick called Harefield Road and I go there when I want to sit down with someone on a weekend night and have a beer. The atmosphere is homey frat/Irish bar, the music selections are choice cuts from the buzz kill bin (grunge and metal) and the drink options are varied and the beer is cold. If I'm with a large group and we're thinking about finding a place with a seat - this joint never fails and I love it for that and recommend it highly.

Records - I find myself buying over-priced used CDs at Earwax Records often enough to feel like I'm running a charity. It's on Bedford at North 5th. There are better record stores with less dust and friendlier staffs in Williamsburg and Greenpoint has Eat which is a great hang but they are not on my way home so I don't end up going there. When you can download pretty much every obscure private press jam from a high school kid's music blog buying used CDs for 9 or 10 bucks makes me feel like I'm an actual artifact from bygone era (which I am). That said Earwax has a decent inventory - it just feels like the customer is an afterthought.
