This weeks "My NY" comes courtesy of Eric Copeland, miscreant noise maker and sound manipulator for Brooklyn's Black Dice. To judge by his entry, Copeland has been seriously holing up in the 'lab of late. His band is hard at work on their follow-up to last year's brain scramble Load Blown and just this week, Eric Copeland's newest 12," Alien in a Garbage Dump, hit the racks. To our ears, the title just about somes it up perfectly, in which cosmic tones for mental therapy intermingle with junk culture and offal, amalgamated as only a Copeland can do it. When Eric does creep out into the daylight, here's where he heads:
* This grocery store on Wythe and Division, Brooklyn.
This shop caters to a mostly Hassid crowd, so you've got to deal with some kids and strollers and a certain type of energy, but the produce (minus the apples) is pretty good. The dry snacks are where you enter a whole new world though. Got to go on intuition here and ask yourself if you really want to check out a bag of falafel-flavored puffed pretzel stars. Lots of items from Israel, which are unfamiliar flavors for a dude from Maine...
* Greenline Groceries, Queens.
Really cheap produce and bread. Maybe once a week I make it up there for a large purchase.
* Farmers Market on Havemeyer and Broadway, Brooklyn.
These guys are pretty small in comparison to the Union Square market, but they have everything pretty much and are cheap enough. Mostly there's less of a crowd when I go, which makes it ideal.
* Image collection NY Public Library, Mid-Manhattan.
Just folders of pictures of everything, a few copy machines, and some characters searching for god-knows-what. Avoid the Men's room though; there's usually someone camped out in a stall.
* Rare Book Room
This seems to be my home away from home sometimes. Dice are in and out for the next few months; Alien in a Garbage Dump was mostly made there; we figured out that we've (Dice) been making jams there for eight years right now, about the time Nicolas Vernhes moved in there, so we've had a lot of learning and growing with the place and with Nicolas.
