Long the object of desire by countless indie-rock boys for her appraisals of Iron & Wine and Sufjan Stevens over at Pitchfork, Amanda Petrusich only upped her secret admirer fanbase by publishing a book on Nick Drake's Pink Moon as part of the ongoing 33 1/3 Continuum series. This month saw the release of her book It Still Moves: Lost Songs, Lost Highways, and the Search for the next American Music. A resident of Brooklyn, Mrs. Petrusich shares some of her favorite things.
Book Court 163 Court Street
I'm biased (and lazy) because I live about 500 feet from its front door, but BookCourt is the kind of place book-nerds are intrinsically drawn to: two impeccably curated floors full of big, beautiful books, complete with shop-cat, super-friendly staff, and a never-fail "recommended" section, which, sadly, has contributed enormously to the over-stuffing of my already-warped bookshelves.

I was introduced to this place by a dedicated local convert, and I never looked back. Best coffee in New York.

Red Hook is the kind of neighborhoods that's constantly "changing," but Sunny's is the sort of institution that bucks change -- or, more specifically, doesn't give a shit. Sunny's is home to a legendary Saturday Night Bluegrass Jam, although it's hardly strictly bluegrass, seeing as how it includes percussion, accordian, all sorts of strings, banjos, guitars, and whatever other noisemakers folks bring in.
Damascus Bakery 195 Atlantic Ave.
This place, on Atlantic Avenue, has the best pita bread I've ever tasted, and racks and racks of gorgeous Middle Eastern sweets.
Coney Island Shortcakes
I hope this place is still around. I first tried one when I was out in Coney Island trying to hunt down Woody Guthrie's house (which, incidentally, is gone). It's a little stand on the boardwalk selling one thing: improbably awesome shortcakes.
