While it may be slightly odd to file a four-film retrospective of director John Carpenter under a 'music' heading, the director has always had an ear for soundtrack music, often scoring it himself using the then new-fangled synthesizer technology.
One need only think of the eerie yet heart-quickening minimal piano lines and icy synth arpeggiations that accompany the steady homicidal stagger of Michael Myers in Halloween to know how effective the man's use of early analog devices was. Just listen to this year's crop of synth-deploying players, be it Norway's Hans-Peter Lindstrøm, Manhattan's own Alex Moulton, Australia's Midnight Juggernauts, or even Portishead (check the coda on "Machine Gun") and you can hear that despite dealing with celluloid, Carpenter is as big a touchstone as Giorgio Moroder and other studio keyboard wizards. Hell, there's even a new disco-edit based on the end credits from The Thing. Relive the 80's or simply realize that even with such ancient synthesizers, they live on.
