Helmet - Unsung
Now we're talking. This week we've actually had to work hard to figure out which shows not to go to, since some nights have multiple good offerings. We haven't had a week like that in a while. Here's the list of what's happening this week:
Monday
J Rocc, Cut Chemist @ The Echoplex
So apparently this is party of a concert series called Red Bull 45s in which dudes like Cut Chemist and J Rocc play from their deep 45 collections. I've seen Cut do stuff like this before and it's always a good time. Expect a lot of heads to be nodding, but there'll be plenty of dancing too. It's also free. Doors at 8.

Tuesday
Talkdemonic @ Spaceland
The first time I saw Talkdemonic they were opening for Menomena and the National at Spaceland. All three bands blew me away and really complemented each other. They've all since gone on to their various levels of fame and fortune, with Talkdemonic taking a slightly lower trajectory with their quiet, understated instrumental music. The live show is great, though, with some of the best indie rock drumming you'll ever hear combined with great instrumental additions on the viola. They only make it to LA once or twice a year, so it's not to be missed.
Wednesday
The Notwist, Jel, Odd Nosdam @ The Fonda
Before you hit this up, run over to Amoeba for a quick free set from the Muslims at 7. Then you can hit up the Fonda for a night of indie beats and european electronica. Say what you want about the latest Notwist record, but you can't argue with the live show. They find a way to make an electronic performance emotional and inspiring -- which is a rare feat. All reports from the latest tour have been solid, so you can expect a good show. I've seen Jel before and he's awesome on the sampler, and Odd Nosdam's latest records have been great so I'm curious to hear him in the live setting.
Thursday
Jenny Lewis, Pierre De Reeder, Beachwood Sparks @ The Orpheum
Let's take a break from all the beats of earlier in the week and hit up some country-tinged indie rock for a night. The orpheum is a nice spot -- an old fashioned sit-down theatre that's a good a place as any for Jenny Lewis' country band performances. You may remember that we caught Beachwood Sparks earlier this summer and it was a surprisingly good set, so it's cool to see them back again.
Friday
Helmet @ The Viper Room
Before you hit up the Hard Haunted Mansion in downtown for your late night halloween rave, head over to the Viper to see a reunited Helmet do what they do best -- fill a small room with hardcore. It's been years since I've seen these guys, but it sounds like a good Friday night activity to me.
Saturday
Yelle, Passion Pit @ The Fonda
It'll be indie rock couple's night at the She & Him show at the Wiltern this Saturday, but my money's on the Passion Pit set at the Fonda. These dudes from Boston have been the latest buzz on the internet, and apparently they put on a good show. I usually like the stuff on French Kiss (les savy fav, the first couple Hold Steady records), so I'm definitely curious to see these dudes. I saw Yelle at sxsw this year and she was funny. It's a weird show, but something worth seeing.
