Review: Rancid @ The Henry Fonda

So My Bloody Valentine may have been the record collector go-to show of the year last night, but it wasn't the only group of loud, aging rockers. My hard earned ticket dollars went to support night three of Rancid's five night stand at the Fonda in Hollywood. And I'll get the big question out of the way first: they did play an Op Ivy song, but it was Knowledge.
So first some history. While the other kids were listening to shoegaze in high school, I was listening to the Epitaph punk rock crew of NOFX, Bad Religion and Rancid. I saw them all multiple times back in the '90s, including Rancid at the now-defunct, legendary cesspool, the Rat in Boston back in '95. I caught NOFX earlier this year at the Knitting Factory on a total whim and just had a blast, so when news of Rancid came around I picked up some tickets.

Turns out it was kind of a disappointment, but I don't blame the band. Five nights at one venue is just too much for them - especially a place as big as the Fonda. The first night of their stand was sold out, and Saturday's show is sold out as well. Thursday night, however, was maybe two-thirds full and you could really feel it. The empty space left room for a flaccid circle pit that broke out immediately and limped turgidly throughout the entire set. It was no whirling anarchic swirl of bodies - it was a slow crawl of folks badly dancing, and young girls throwing punches. There was just nothing at stake and simply made more of a distraction than anything else, taking a lot away from the show. The Fonda also leaves the house lights relatively bright for a punk show, which keeps the energy down.

The set list was great though, with Tim and the gang running through about 20 songs in an hour and a half, hitting at least one from every album. It was heavy on their most popular record, ...And Out Come the Wolves, with a  few nuggets from their two eponymous records and only two from Life Won't Wait (it's hard to pull of the arrangements with just two guitars, bass and drums). Bassist Matt Freeman sang on three songs, which was good to see, and Lars was the most talkative one of the night. Behind them was grainy, high contrast, black and white footage showing on a massive screen. It was a mix of album art, band logos, and clips from Army of Darkness, which was admittedly pretty sweet.
