No Age - Brain Burner
I'm pretty sure that New No Age is a No Age cover band that Randy Randall joined because he was super into them. No that's not a joke.
The show costs five bucks at the door and I'm sure if you wait around long enough you'll see Randy and Dean shred for awhile.

Eagle and Talon, DJ Kevin Bronson @ Spaceland. Free
First of all, it's nice to see Kevin Bronson, former LA Times music writer, still out there in the scene making things happen. I'm sure he'll have a good local selection to play, and if you're not following his Buzzbands blog, it's definitely worth your time. Ok, and while we're at it we should go check out Eagle and Talon. These two girls were nice enough to send me a handwritten postcard asking me to come see them. How can I say no to that? They play a version of modern rock that's a touch more mainstream than your average Spaceland band, but they're still pretty weird.

Japanese Motors @ The Silverlake Lounge, free.
Though they're on Vice Records, and they're local, you don't hear too much about Japanese Motors. They run in decidedly non-indie circles, choosing instead to focus on the surf circuit which has always been their bread and butter. So it's nice to see them playing in Silverlake on a free night and hopefully winning over some fans. I personally haven't seen them, but this seems a good a chance as any to see what the hype's all about.
Azure Ray - November
This one isn't exactly music-related but the impact is potentially huge. As of today, the Metro Red Line is running until 3 a.m.. I know to you New York-types this doesn't seem like that big a deal, but to public-transportation-phobic Los Angeles, this is a tremendous step in the right direction.
This is more about photographs than it is about music, but these are photographs of musicians so I think it counts. Anyway, on Friday night the Zune Bar on Beverly is hosting the opening of Peter Beste's True Norwegian Black Metal exhibit.
If you remember, Beste just put out a book of the same name featuring his photos, which document the black metal scene in Norway. Obviously Norway is home to some of the craziest metal the world has ever seen, and Beste's photos do a great job of capturing it without being exploitative or ironic.

Vivian Girls - Wild Eyes
You have to respect The Smell. It's the archetypal ramshackle venue that you remember from high school. It's a shoebox with high ceilings, awkward stage placement, bad sightlines, no ventilation, a total bottleneck near the bathrooms, and some kind of stand selling something organic or vegan (in my day it would've been a food not bombs table). In this it is perfect. And as a youth you're willing to overlook these things and embrace them. They're the things they you learn to love about venues, and you can cherish their imperfections.

Breeders, Muslims @ the wiltern $25
After this weekend's host of shows, it's probably best to settle into the week with some familiar familiar and comfortable. So why not hit up one of the bigger, cushier venues for some of the Breeders classic rock. Young local upstarts the Muslims open up.
