Wild One - Those Darlins
The first time I heard Those Darlins, this trio from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, struck me as a group of pals who started playing songs together just for kicks--the way lots of rock and country bands form, I'm sure. But their performances hum with a spirit of fun and camaraderie that I rarely hear these days--and without devolving into a loose jam session or hootenanny.
Though the group's sound is rooted in country, for better or worse, the songs also rock. Some of their original tunes are fairly silly--"I got drunk and I ate a chicken / I ate a chicken I found in my kitchen / Not just a leg and not just a wing / I'd like to let you know that I ate the whole damn thing"--but three or four spins of their self-titled three-track debut on Oh Wow Dang Records and a listen to their four-song set for Hear Ya Live Sessions have convinced me that their tunes are sturdier and catchier than I first gave them credit for. They're not bad players either--I'm especially impressed by the nimble guitar playing that Jessi Darlin (they've all got the same fake last name, Ramones style) turns in on "Wild One," which was inspired by the Louvin Brothers number "You're Running Wild."
