Master Taker - Jeb Bishop
You could be forgiven for thinking there are two Swiss bassists named Christian Weber out there. On his new Walcheturm Solo (Cut) he conducts a brutal, astonishing survey of the noises his instrument can make that aren't quite notes, transforming a minimalist collection of grainy arco drags, startling percussive slaps, and astringent pizzicato pings into a tactile symphony of nerve-rattling turbulence.
But on We Concentrate (Hatology, 2006), a trio set led by pianist Chris Wiesendanger, he plays the changes for "Embraceable You" and "Stella by Starlight." This ability to straddle two seemingly incompatible aesthetics is what makes Weber so impressive; equally fluent in jazz and experimental music, he's visited Chicago with groups ranging from the electroacoustic sound-research trio Mersault to the freebop combo Day & Taxi. For this show--part of "European Jazz Meets Chicago," the first night of the Umbrella Music Festival, he's joined by locals Jeb Bishop on trombone, Tim Daisy on drums, and Caroline Davis on alto saxophone.
