Baltimore

Aaron Lacrate Rock Star Guide to Baltimore (Part I)

Watch

I took an informal poll recently among a few friends and IM acquaintances and asked what came to mind when I said "Baltimore." John Waters, The Wire and Michael Phelps were the most common answers (that's what I would have said too), which I suppose means nothing except that we all watch a lot of TV. The point I'm trying to make here is that none of those things were on Aaron Lacrate's list. That's because he's from there.

Aaron's Baltimore is about the people, the music and the food that shaped his childhood and teenage years. Aaron's tour was scattered with "blasts from the past" and anecdotes about almost every street corner - and although he lives in New York City these days, his mission with Milkcrate Records and his DJ game is to bring B-More to the world. He picked us up with a laundry list of people he wanted us to meet (DJ Equalizer, Mike Mumblez, Young Verb and Debonair Samir), places to see and things to do. He took us straight from our hotel lobby to a nightclub (at 1 a.m. -- approximately 15 minutes after we arrived in Baltimore via train), and from that moment, it was obvious just how much pride Aaron has in his city.

But there was disappointment, too. His favorite flea-market stand had relocated to the Internet, the dilapidated neighborhood crab-shack was given a brand new facade - he kept finding signs that his beloved Gutter Aesthetic is being remodeled into something shiny and new. (Aaron Lacrate -- the photographer -- recently displayed his old photos of East Baltimore in a Dazed Gallery show called Bodymore Murdaland).

The good news for Aaron is that several of his favorite places have thus far eluded renovation. Blocks of abandoned row homes line the streets around Verb's neighborhood, Down the Hill. Aaron's parents still live in the house he was born in and he shows us you can still admire the graffiti under the bridge, shop for curios in the massive North Point Flea Market, and if you are going to eat crab, you are still going to get messy.
