Build Voice - Dan Deacon
Dan Deacon's live shows are communal experiences, in which ecstatic crowds twist and turn in time with the knobs on the Baltimore electronic music performer's jury-rigged DJ station.
You certainly don't have to be high to appreciate these performances -- though many are. Vibing to his albums while alone, however, is more difficult, as the raucous atmosphere doesn't always translate onto CD. But on his new album Bromst Deacon has said he was shooting for a spiritual -- rather than a "let's get wasted" -- vibe, and he mostly succeeds. Like his last studio work, 2007's Spiderman of the Rings, Bromst is full of high-pitched vocal samples, chaotic keyboards and speedy chord progressions. This time around, however, the songs feature more live instruments, better sound quality and more complex arrangements. You'll still want to dance to tracks like "Build Voice" and "Of The Mountains," but you won't need to be in a big crowd (or stoned) to enjoy yourself.
